The US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has revealed evidence suggesting China’s attempts at influencing and potentially interfering with the upcoming US elections despite an earlier commitment from Chinese leader Xi Jinping not to do so. In a recent interview, Blinken informed CNN that he reiterated President Joe Biden’s warning to Xi about not intervening in the 2024 election during their San Francisco summit last November. While speaking with top Chinese officials over three days on various contentious issues like US tech controls and Beijing’s support for Moscow, Blinken asserted that China has already tried influencing and possibly meddling with the upcoming polls, an action which he called unacceptable as America scrutinises every evidence carefully. Although repeated pledges of no foreign intervention were earlier reportedly made by Xi to Biden, Beijing continues denying any interference in US elections based on its principle against interfering in other countries’ internal affairs. However, China or actors believed to be affiliated with it have been accused of political meddling elsewhere like Canada. Blinken also defended the American right to protest when asked about recent pro-Palestinian demonstrations that erupted across college campuses and reports of antisemitic rhetoric at some gatherings. Although there had reportedly been cases with explicit expressions of anti-Semitism, protests as such weren’t a case against Jewish individuals since emotions on this subject varied immensely between youngsters and folks from all walks of life across America according to Blinken who added that democracy necessitated providing scope for such voices. This report is ongoing, but more updates are anticipated in due course.
