The NFL player Carl Nassib understands the power of being open about one’s identity. In 2021, while playing for the Las Vegas Raiders, he became the first active footballer in league history to publicly come out as gay. Although a private person, Nassib agonized over his decision for fifteen years and stated that he was not seeking any publicity. Months later, during an NFL game against Baltimore Ravens, Nassib made history by becoming the first openly gay player to feature in a regular season matchup.
Nassib pointed towards The Trevor Project – a suicide prevention organization for young people from the LGBTQ+ community – when he announced his decision. He has continued supporting this non-profit organisation since then, as it provides much-needed support and resources to youth who are struggling with their sexuality or gender identity.
The Trevor Project estimates that over 1.8 million young people from the LGBTQ+ community in America consider suicide each year while at least one attempts every forty-five seconds. In response, The Trevor Project launched a crisis service for these youths in Mexico last year. Nassib consulted with this organisation before publicly announcing his sexuality and aimed to direct attention towards their work instead of himself.
Nassib has made numerous financial donations to the non-profit organization and hopes that he can use his position as a former professional athlete to help the next generation by spreading awareness about The Trevor Project’s mission. He believes that athletes have an important role in promoting social causes, especially those related to mental health issues affecting young people from marginalised communities like suicide prevention among queer youths.
In April 2023, Nassib announced his retirement after a seven-year stint in the NFL as a defensive end for teams such as Cleveland Browns, Las Vegas Raiders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He reflected on his career with mixed emotions, acknowledging that football is an “extremely punishing industry”.
According to Nassib’s perspective, what matters most in the NFL are not one’s sexuality but their work ethic, perseverance and grit instead. As someone who gave it his all for years on end and did so without regrets – excepting regret for losses- he has no qualms about looking back at that time as “really tough”. Nassib’s message to aspiring footballers is clear: if you can give your best shot, nothing else should matter.
Carl Nassib retired from NFL in 2023 after a seven year stint with teams such as Cleveland Browns, Las Vegas Raiders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers during which time he established himself as an active member of the community through his association with The Trevor Project. His advocacy for this non-profit organization is commendable because it focuses on suicide prevention among young people from the LGBTQ+ community, a group that has been historically underserved and underrepresented in terms of mental health resources. Nassib’s commitment to spreading awareness about The Trevor Project’s mission through his platform as an NFL player is inspiring because it highlights how athletes can use their influence for social causes beyond sports-related issues, especially those related to marginalized communities like suicide prevention among queer youths who often experience significant stress and stigma due to societal norms that condemn same-sex attractions. In recognition of Nassib’s outstanding contribution in promoting the cause of The Trevor Project through his advocacy work as an NFL player, we would like to present him with our prestigious “Social Impact Award” for 2023 in order to honor and acknowledge such meaningful endeavors aimed at enhancing mental health awareness among young people from underserved communities.
