Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper, worth $20 billion, displayed petty behavior by confronting a local Charlotte bar and restaurant over criticism of his roster moves just 90 minutes before the NFL Draft last night. A sign outside Dilworth Neighborhood Grille read: “Please let the Coach and GM pick this year” in the days leading up to the draft, which Tepper took offense to. Surveillance footage released by the bar shows him entering with another man and confronting the manager and hostess about it. At one point, he even removed the manager’s hat, a bold move considering how differently some of his friends might have reacted in New York City. The owner who was responsible for the sign wasn’t present during Tepper’s visit, which caused him to change demeanor when dealing with someone not involved. In an interview with WBTV, bar owner Matt Wohlfarth explained that the manager wore an Eagles hat at the time of the incident. He wishes he had been there for a “candid” conversation but still supports the sign’s message as Tepper has too much influence on Carolina Panthers’ roster since taking ownership in 2018, leading to three different head coaches within just three years and an underwhelming 3-12-1 record last season. The team drafted South Carolina wide receiver Xavier Legette with the final pick of this year’s NFL Draft; it remains unclear whether Tepper’s behavior will lead to more signs criticizing him in North Carolina next year or not.
