FTC Announces $5.6 Million Ring Security Camera Refund Over Privacy Breach Allegations

Customers who purchased certain types of Ring security cameras during specific time periods may be eligible for refunds from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The FTC revealed this week that more than 117,000 people will collectively receive over $5.6 million in PayPal payments as part of a settlement between Ring and the agency. This agreement resolved allegations made by the FTC against Ring last year, which claimed that employees and contractors had been able to access customers’ private videos without proper security measures being implemented. The refunds are intended for individuals who owned indoor cameras from Ring during these periods when unauthorized users may have accessed customer data. While Ring maintains that it “focuses on delivering products and features” to its clients while prioritizing privacy and security, the FTC alleges that the company failed to implement sufficient protections against hackers gaining control of user accounts and footage. Affected customers are advised by the FTC to accept their refunds within 30 days as they do not require any payment or account information for this process.
