An idyllic private island with sandy beaches, puffins galore, seven houses, a pub, and even a helipad is up for sale off the west coast of Scotland. Known as “Spoon Island” due to its resemblance to an upturned spoon, Sanda lies between Scotland and Northern Ireland and has historical connections with monks, saints, kings, and famous rock band Cream’s Jack Bruce. The island comes complete with a registered farm code and 55 black-faced sheep who “look after themselves” as part of the sale. With its recent refurbishment and new double glazing added to most accommodation, energy is currently generated by three generators on site but there are opportunities for renewable sources too. Knight Frank, handling the sale, says a couple of extra islands are also included in the offer: Sheep Island with 31.72 acres and Glunimore Island at just 4.41 acres. With offers exceeding £2.5 million ($3.1m) requested by its vendor, interested parties fall into two categories – wealthy individuals who will use it for themselves or those seeking to commercialise the pub, buildings and farm operations whilst exploring renewable energy sources as a supplementary electricity source. The island’s wildlife includes puffins, kittiwakes, cormorants, shags, razorbills plus “island lawn mowers” in its black-faced sheep population who require little management themselves! With the possibility of self sufficiency for the new owners, if you fancy becoming an Isle resident then start checking your sofa cushions – Sanda is waiting.
