As an esteemed native of Yonkers, New York, Mary J. Blige has not forgotten her roots in the community that helped launch her career. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee is giving back by partnering with Pepsi to establish a fund worth $100,00 for local organizations whose work elevates and educates underserved women in Yonkers through grants ranging from $5,000-$20,00. The singer shared that it was deeply fulfilling since her movement has always been about helping and uplifting women. Known as the “queen of hip-hop soul,” Blige’s early career was marked by passionate yet often sad songs that mirrored personal struggles she encountered in her life. She didn’t realize that her healing process could be an outlet to assist others until her 1997 album, ‘Share My World,’ resonated strongly with fans dealing with similar issues. Blige’s “Strength of a Woman Festival and Summit” launched last year is also part of the artist’s call for service; it includes panel discussions, concerts, and fellowship sessions running from May 10-12 this year in New York City after its successful Atlanta debut earlier. Blige expressed her excitement about bringing the event home to Yonkers since she was born and raised there, adding that everyone is thrilled with the move as well. More information on the festival can be found at ‘Strength of a Woman.’
