Actress Sophia Bush has publicly identified as queer in an intimate article for Glamour magazine a year after announcing her divorce from entrepreneur Grant Hughes. The 41-year-old star of “One Tree Hill” revealed she almost called off their wedding in April last year, but instead doubled down on being the perfect wife during their extravagant nuptials that summer. However, Bush admitted it was the difficult process of undergoing fertility treatments that led her to reassess her relationship and ultimately realize “I absolutely had made a mistake.” She explained how this realization prompted her to move across Europe for theater roles last year, which eventually had to be postponed due to ill health. Upon returning home to Los Angeles in the summer of 2021, Bush grew closer with a group of women who were also dealing with relationship breakdowns and other personal issues at that time. Among them was former soccer player Ashlyn Harris, whom she’d known for four years during her separation from partner Ali Krieger. Describing how she “fell in love” with Harris, Bush said: “I sort of hate the notion of having to come out in 2024.” She continued by explaining that while there were more than 500 anti-LGBTQIA+ bills proposed at state legislatures last year alone, it was important for her to acknowledge and honor coming out as a respected act. Bush further revealed: “I think I’ve always known my sexuality exists on the spectrum” adding, “Right now, I believe that word [queer] best defines it.” The star shared with pride how she has experienced safety, respect, and love in the queer community throughout her life as an ally.
