Parents and grandparents have expressed deep concern over the diminishing viability of the American dream for younger generations. Several individuals speaking to Fox News lamented that it has become increasingly challenging, if not impossible, for their children and grandchildren to achieve what they themselves were able to accomplish in terms of homeownership, financial security and general opportunity in life. Around 36% of respondents participating last autumn’s Wall Street Journal/NORC poll concurred that the American dream is no longer a reality today compared with nearly half (47%) who held this view five years ago. “They can’t afford the American Dream,” Pat from Gilroy, California remarked, while Sharon from Paso Robles voiced similar apprehension over soaring housing costs and inflation combined with stagnant wages that have made it difficult for young people to own homes or pursue their aspirations. However, a few individuals were more optimistic about the future of this cherished ideal, insisting that sheer perseverance continues providing plentiful possibilities amid challenges presented in American life at present. El Cajon Mayor Bill Wells acknowledged that many Americans are disheartened and anxious over whether they would be able to have “the kind of security” that older generations once had given the way things stand now, asserting that a skewed social structure seems unfairly tilted against individuals who work hard in pursuit of their dreams. Nonetheless, Jackie Matthews from Colorado contended that America has become something like an entrenched caste system where one’s starting point tends to define how they fare eventually since prospects appear less open now compared with decades past. “The American dream is definitely alive and well,” Lori from Glendora said confidently, while Jack Enright – a small business owner in San Diego – shared her conviction that America continues providing vast opportunities for people who are willing to work hard enough despite the current difficulties they face. Mayor Wells hopes that like Rocky Balboa, an iconic fictional character whose spirit and resilience eventually enabled him triumph over adversity at last, a similar fate may await Americans too if things take a positive turn soon.
