The CEO and owner of AEW Wrestling, Tony Khan, unleashed a bold statement about his rival WWE during an appearance on NFL Network while dressed in a neck brace reminiscent of Andy Kaufman’s wrestler character. Asked to comment on the popularity of his company compared to its biggest competitor, he replied: “The AEW is like the Pepsi of pro wrestling; WWE is like Harvey Weinstein.” The NFL Network presenters responded with apparent shock and awkward laughter as some executives were said to have panicked at Khan’s choice of words. McMahon recently stepped down from his role after facing charges relating to sexual misconduct, while former owner Vince was forced out in 2015 over similar allegations. Critics argued that the AEW chief had missed an opportunity for positive promotion by making such a comparison during NFL Draft coverage. However, professional wrestling has always been known for its absurdity – including Donald Trump’s ‘match’ against Vince McMahon where losing hair was on offer if he emerged as champion (in favour of The Apprentice host). Khan and his father Shad selected LSU wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. Following a trade with the Vikings, giving up their 17th pick for picks at later stages in this year’s draft.
