A transitional governing body aimed at bringing stability to Haiti has been installed in its capital, where high levels of violence and hunger continue to afflict the nation. Consisting of eight men and one woman with seven voting members, this council will choose a new prime minister, cabinet and outline a roadmap for future elections following President Jovenel Moïse’s assassination last year. The group is set to serve until February 2026 when a fresh president would be sworn in. Some notable individuals among them include economist Fritz Alphonse Jean who has previously served as interim prime minister, former senator Dr Louis Gérald Gilles representing the outgoing Prime Minister Ariel Henry’s group and Leslie Voltaire – an influential politician with a career spanning over 30 years. The council replaces Dominique Dupuy, UNESCO ambassador who resigned following political attacks and death threats.
