‘United for Israel’ march attendee David Silberberg calls out pro-Palestine protests after supporters of Israel stage counter-demonstration. Meanwhile, at the University of Washington in Seattle, a student protest group postponed an encampment against Israel’s actions due to lack of representation from Palestinian, Arab and Muslim students. The Progressive Student Union (UWPSU) faced criticism for not listening enough to these groups, with some claiming they had “zero community support” from them. UWPSU deleted comments criticising the group over this issue.
Colleges across the US have seen major student protests in recent times. At Columbia University alone, more than 100 people were arrested during demonstrations against Israel’s actions. A similar protest at the University of Texas (UT Austin) also led to more than fifty arrests after protesters shouted “Pigs go home!” at police officers.
In a recent development, Columbia announced that it would not invite the New York Police Department onto campus to disperse protests. This decision follows increasing tensions between students and law enforcement during demonstrations against Israel’s actions. It remains to be seen how other colleges will respond as these incidents continue to unfold across campuses nationwide.
