Deadly Tornado Hits Guangzhou amidst Heavy Flooding in Southern China

Rewritten Article:
A tornado struck Guangzhou, a city with 19 million residents in southern China on Saturday, resulting in at least five deaths and leaving behind 33 injured individuals according to state media reports from the country. Authorities disclosed that as many as 141 factories suffered damage but thankfully no residential buildings collapsed during this level-three intensity tornado (two levels below the highest category of five). The Xinhua news agency provided details about these events, which occurred in Guangzhou’s capital city province called Guangdong. Previously in Liangtian Village near where it struck, a weather station reported winds reaching 20.6 meters per second at maximum speed during the tornado event. As of 10 p.m., rescue operations have ended following this occurrence.
This recent disaster follows several days filled with heavy rainfall that has affected southern China in a lethal and flooding-inducing way. Due to torrential rains, Guangdong province – an economic hub home to 127 million people – is now dealing with extensive floods resulting in the relocation of more than 110,000 individuals as reported by state media citing local authorities. Four deaths have been attributed to flooding that took place earlier this week across Guangdong according to prior reports from Chinese outlets.
Since April 16th, there has been a persistent downpour in the Pearl River Delta region of China – which is known as its manufacturing heartland and one of the country’s most populated areas. Four weather stations situated within this area have recorded unprecedented amounts of rainfall during that particular time span alone, representing yet another extreme impact related to climate change which intensifies downpours causing increased levels of death toll counts worldwide year by year – including China where tornadoes are not as frequent but still occur from time-to-time.
Research findings issued back in 2015 found that about ninety annually takes place, and since the early sixties at least one thousand seven hundred seventy two individuals have died due to such phenomena in the region’s five decade span (based on data sourced for scholarly analysis). The China Meteorological Agency has warned of continued heavy rainfall with strong storm conditions that are expected to persist until the end of April. This story is still developing, and further updates will be provided as they become available.
