The NFL draft has set a new attendance record after more than 700,000 people flocked to downtown Detroit for the three-day event. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer revealed this during day three of the draft at Campus Martius Park on Saturday. The previous attendance record was held by Nashville in 2019 with around 600,000 fans filling Broadway over a similar timeframe. Detroit attracted an impressive 275,000 people for round one and half a million (550,00) for the second day, smashing Day One and Two attendance records from Nashville’s 2015 edition of the draft as part of its ten-year tour around America. The NFL did not charge fans to attend this year’s event in Detroit but is expected to generate over $160 million through sold-out hotels, packed bars, restaurants and retail stores within downtown areas due to an influx of visitors and locals alike. Former Lions running back Billy Sims’ restaurant on Woodward Avenue reported brisk sales under a tent with fans enjoying the festivities as he declared: “Fans have been great; business has also been good”. Around twenty NFL teams are said to be involved in preliminary conversations concerning potential draft sites for upcoming editions. Next year’s NFL draft is due to take place in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The Associated Press reported this story.
