Storm chasers captured footage of a significant tornado moving through communities near Shelby, Iowa. The National Weather Service issued a Tornado Emergency warning due to this life-threatening weather event in the Hawkeye State’s southwest region. Minden appeared to be most severely affected by the storm, around 100 miles west of Des Moines. Storm chaser videos showed homes and farms being destroyed as radar detected debris flying thousands of feet into the sky. Brett Adair, a weather chaser, commented that the tornado caused substantial damage because it persisted on the ground for an extended period and impacted multiple small towns en route to Minden and other surrounding regions in open spaces with greater field visibility yielding reduced consequences due to fewer structures being affected by its path. The NWS office in Omaha, Nebraska issued 42 Tornado Warnings and 25 Severe Thunderstorms on Friday alone as more than two dozen tornados were spotted across Iowa during the multi-day severe weather outbreak that caused damage throughout the heartland region of the United States. Authorities have not disclosed specific figures regarding destroyed or damaged properties, but Minden has a population under 600 people. The governor of Iowa declared an emergency for Pottawattamie County, home to fifteen towns including Council Bluffs and Shelby. Residents in affected areas are facing the daunting prospect of cleanup operations as they brace themselves against heightened severe storm risk zones over the weekend that may leave them with no respite from ongoing recovery efforts.
