Junior Colson spent all three years of his college football career under Jim Harbaugh at the University of Michigan. Now, he will be reunited with his former coach as an NFL player after being selected by the Los Angeles Chargers in the third round (69th overall) of this year’s draft.
Harbaugh returned to the NFL earlier this year to become head coach for the Los Angeles-based team after leading San Francisco to Super Bowl XLVII appearance as part of a four-year coaching tenure with that franchise back in 2013. He lost to his brother John’s Baltimore Ravens, who ultimately came out victorious at the big game.
Several Wolverines were selected during this year’s draft, including Minnesota Vikings first-rounder J.J McCarthy, who went tenth overall in the selection process. Three Michigan players followed each other closely as they got picked by their respective teams – Blake Corum (Los Angeles Rams), Roman Wilson (Pittsburgh Steelers) and Zak Zinter (Cincinnati Bengals).
Colson was informed of his new NFL home when Harbaugh himself called him to break the news. During that conversation, Harbaugh let out a familiar Michigan rallying cry – “Who’s got it better than us?” Colson responded with an equally recognizable answer: “Nobody.” Shortly after, Harbaugh exclaimed his signature phrase from his time at Michigan – “Hail to the Victors.”
Colson had career-high 44 solo tackles last season as part of a defense that played pivotal roles in achieving an unblemished 15–0 record. His total number of tackles for the year amounted to 95, which was also the highest on his team. The Chargers’ defensive unit ranked 28th out of all NFL teams last season and could use any reinforcement they can get in light of this fact.
