LIV Golf Caddie Deserves Hazard Pay After Water Bottle Mishap at Party Hole

Golf caddies usually do not receive hazard pay as part of their job duties; however, one particular individual at LIV Golf Adelaide’s second round should request it after a mishap occurred. Australian golfer Lucas Herbert made a birdie putt on the 12th hole at The Grange Golf Club, which sparked an outburst from the enthusiastic crowd in attendance. This is known as that course’s “party hole,” and rowdy behavior like this is expected here. In fact, Herbert even encouraged them to continue their raucousness.

Unfortunately for Herbert’s caddie Nick Pugh, one of those water bottles thrown by the audience struck him in the head while he was replacing the flagstick on the green after putting it back into place following a successful putt made by his player. Fortunately, Pugh escaped without any significant injuries and returned to the clubhouse unscathed despite initially experiencing pain due to concern from Herbert at first glance of events transpiring post-shot attempt.

Herbert appeared passive-aggressive in response when asked about this incident during a press conference after his round was completed, stating that “I was worried about him [Pugh] to begin with, but he’s good now.” He further added: “[He’s] Good and he took it really well. It’s probably asking too much for someone who has had 15 beers to aim a water bottle away from someone,” indicating that the fan responsible could have done more to prevent this mishap, given their level of intoxication at the time.

Despite being taken out due to injury incurred by one errant missile, Herbert’s day was not ruined entirely as he managed a seven-under 65 during his second round; however, he still trails American Brendan Steele for individual honors by an impressive margin of seven shots. The Ripper GC that he represents is currently fourth in the team competition after completing their second rounds at LIV Golf Adelaide’s inaugural tournament.
