During a demolition project in Minnesota, workers came across an old-time capsule from 1920 buried beneath Owatonna High School. The discovery was made as the construction crew dismantled the front pillars and doors of the school. Upon opening the time capsule at a community event on Monday, it contained items such as lists detailing teachers, administrators, financial statements, high school newspapers, magnets, and local news publications from 1920 that highlighted information about schools in the area back then. Jeff Elstad, Superintendent of Owatonna Public Schools, expressed his delight at finding a time capsule hidden within the cornerstone of the building. He further added that it’s always exciting to learn more about community history and unravel tales about those who envisioned an outstanding learning facility for generations. The district’s museum committee is working with Steele County Historical Society in preserving these items, which will later be decided upon whether they are displayed at the school or added to historical society’s collection archives. Elstad emphasized that this discovery has enabled community members to reflect on their past and reaffirmed his commitment towards safeguarding history for future generations.
