Posey, a Republican congressman from Florida, announced on Friday that he will not be seeking re-election in upcoming elections, becoming another lawmaker who decided against running again amid the recent surge of departures within GOP ranks. Posey declared this decision following “circumstances beyond his control,” although he did not elaborate further.
In a statement released by him and his wife Katie, Posey expressed gratitude for being given the privilege to represent their constituents in Congress since 2008 and had earlier considered staying until a final term, provided polls would sustain continued support from them; nonetheless, as unpredictable twists befell over past weeks, Mike Haridopolos decided that he was ready to replace Posey.
Haridopolis announced his campaign on Friday via Facebook post thanking the outgoing congressman for his faithful service to their community, state and nation while promising to continue serving District 8 with integrity and honor as a way of living up to Posey’s distinguished tradition. For close-to twenty years from being sworn into legislature posts in Florida State Legislature until now, the Republican has been an unwavering supporter for former President Donald Trump.
Posey was elected to Congress back in 2008 following almost two decades as a prominent lawmaker representing Floridian citizens on behalf of his state’s legislative arm; he also served alongside Florida Senate Presidents, including Haridopolos who has been appointed by Posey himself. The congressman recently opposed Speaker Mike Johnson-supported foreign aid package and FISA renewal in the latter part of this month as well due to a mounting border security crisis that’s plaguing their nation coupled with an overwhelming national debt which is putting undue strain on cities, endangering Americans’ safety.
Posey voiced out his views through statements released after voting against foreign aid packages because they failed to secure the borders while emphasizing America should always be given top priority in Washington by ensuring that it’s secured and balanced budget are put into action first before any other spending bill is passed, which he has voted against for over four years.
