The Guatemalan authorities have carried out a raid on the offices of Save the Children following complaints about how Guatemalan children are being treated in shelters in Texas, according to the country’s Public Prosecutor. The investigation was launched after allegations that migrant children were being subjected to vulnerabilities linked with a network involving NGOs operating in both countries. However, Save the Children denied any wrongdoing and claimed it did not facilitate or transfer children from Guatemala. It also stated that its books are audited annually by the UK’s Charity Commission. The case is being described as “transnational” and of great significance due to the involvement of several organisations, according to Rafael Curruchiche, the Prosecutor for Impunity in Guatemala. This follows previous sanctions against Curruchiche himself from both the European Council and US officials for allegedly undermining democracy, the rule of law, and peaceful transfers of power in Guatemala by obstructing corruption investigations and raising “spurious” claims about other officials. The current President Bernardo Arévalo has promised to empower the judiciary but has been constrained due to requests from Attorney General Consuelo Porras – also under US sanctions for allegedly attempting to disqualify election results – asking that his immunity be withdrawn twice. Guatemala’s Attorney General’s office did not respond to CNN’s multiple requests for comment regarding these accusations.
