Angela Kinsey Speaks Out Against Stereotypical Jokes for Christian Character in ‘The Office’

Angela Kinsey, known for her role as the uptight Christian character ‘Angela’ in popular sitcom ‘The Office’, recently opened up about how her faith sometimes caused conflicts with certain jokes written for her character. Speaking on a recent podcast appearance with former co-star Rainn Wilson, Kinsey explained that there were occasions when lines given to Angela seemed stereotypical and one-dimensional, particularly in an episode during the show’s third season where she was being overly judgmental towards Oscar, another gay character on the programme. “I remember a particular storyline between Angela and Oscar, where Angela was being super judgey,” Kinsey recalled. “There was a joke at Oscar’s expense, and I went up to Greg [Daniels] and said ‘I can’t.’ I just wasn’t comfortable with it.” The actress continued that she felt the character invoking Jesus in the line didn’t accurately reflect her beliefs about Christianity. When Daniels heard Kinsey out, he removed the joke from the episode titled “Gay Witch Hunt” as the instalment had enough jibes directed towards Oscar already without needing an additional one. Two former ‘The Office’ stars recently discussed their religious convictions during a podcast appearance with Wilson sharing memories of his mother reading the Bible and father leading prayers at dinner time. Wilson called for “spiritual revolution” in last year’s published book while also identifying as a follower of Baha’i faith, founded in 19th century Iraq. Last May, the actor highlighted what he believes is anti-Christian sentiment within Hollywood after noticing that ‘David’, a Bible reading character from TV series ‘The Last Of Us,’ was portrayed negatively due to his religious beliefs. “As soon as David started reading from the Bible I knew that he was going to be an awful villain,” Wilson tweeted, adding: “Could there ever be a Bible-reading preacher on a show who is actually loving and kind?”
