The Caleb Williams era has officially commenced for the Chicago Bears as they selected him with the first overall pick in this year’s NFL draft. In addition, Rome Odunze, an All-America receiver from Washington State and teammate of USC Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams’, was taken by the Bears at pick No. 9 to complement their prized quarterback prospect. Chicago head coach Matt Eberflus expressed optimism about the impact these rookies will have on his football squad, stating that “this is an impact draft for this organization.”
The Bears’ selection of Williams came as no surprise as general manager Ryan Poles revealed his contentment with how their initial plans unfolded. The team also added Yale graduate Kiran Amegadjie in the third round and Iowa punter Tory Taylor during day three, trading into the fifth to select Kansas edge rusher Austin Booker from Buffalo’s 2025 fourth-round draft choice after releasing Tarik Cohen following six years as an electric change-of-pace back.
The Bears have been rebuilding their roster under Poles and Eberflus, who in two seasons has transformed the team into a potential playoff contender with the likes of edge rusher Montez Sweat and cornerback Jaylon Johnson leading Chicago’s defense while Keenan Allen was acquired from Los Angeles Chargers to bolster their offense alongside DJ Moore.
The Bears have had an uneasy history at quarterback, but Poles is confident that Williams can change the narrative. “I think it’s going to be tough to defend starting with practice,” Eberflus said of his new-look team’s formidable attack. The franchise has never seen a signal caller throw for over 4000 yards in one season, but Poles is unfazed by this statistic and believes that the right people are being hired at all levels to build an effective culture around victories.
The Bears selected homegrown player Amegadjie with their third-round draft choice following his two seasons as Yale’s left tackle after starting out on the opposite side of the line in 2021, and Poles envisions him serving initially as a swing tackle who can also play guard. Meanwhile, Taylor has set an NCAA record for most yards punting last season with Iowa despite playing behind one of college football’s worst offenses. The Australian’s impressive leg strength is expected to significantly boost the Bears’ defense by flipping fields and making immediate impacts in Chicago.
