During an appearance on “Varney & Co,” Jimmy Failla shared his thoughts on whether California Governor Gavin Newsom has national appeal, as the governor recently asked for public input in designing a new $1 coin that honors innovation from the state. However, many responses to the call-out focused on issues facing the state instead of positive accomplishments it was once known for. With businesses fleeing due to crime and homelessness, Newsom’s failure to address budget deficits and rising costs has been heavily criticized by constituents. Some have also expressed frustration with his focus on national pro-abortion campaigns rather than issues directly affecting California such as an insurance crisis, affordability crisis, increasing crimes, wildfire risks, and skyrocketing electricity prices. When a press secretary for the State Assembly Republicans suggested putting images of homeless encampments and fires onto the coin to represent Newsom’s handling of these problems, other users also made lighthearted suggestions such as Harvey Weinstein or high gasoline costs on the proposed state currency. One user even questioned whether a coin contest was an appropriate use of resources given California’s current issues, suggesting that Governor Ron DeSantis from Florida might have better ideas for running a successful state.
