Renewed polling data indicates that former President Donald Trump is currently leading current president Joe Biden in a potential November rematch. According to the CNN survey which only considers candidates Trump and Biden, 49% of respondents indicated their preference for Trump while just 43% favored Biden. When accounting for independent contenders such as Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Jill Stein, and Cornel West, support for Trump rose slightly at 42%, with Biden trailing behind at 33%. The poll was conducted between April 18-23 of this year.
The survey also revealed that respondents held more favorable views towards the Trump administration than they did President Joe Biden’s time in office, indicating that fifty-five percent of voters consider former president Donald Trump’s tenure a success compared to just thirty-nine percent for current president Biden. A comparable January 2021 poll found that at the close of his presidency, only forty-five percent deemed Trump’s administration as unsuccessful.
The survey also highlighted significant disparities in party loyalty between Republicans and Democrats regarding their views on both administrations. Ninety-two percent of Republican respondents declared former President Donald Trump’s term a success while seventy-three percent stated that Biden had been successful thus far during his presidency, with fourteen percent viewing both as failures and eight percent seeing them both as triumphant ventures.
While overall opinions towards both politicians were predominantly negative, fifty-eight percent of voters expressed unfavorable sentiments toward Joe Biden while an identical number displayed similarly hostile feelings for Donald Trump in the same polling period. Nevertheless, there was still a sizeable group that seemed hesitant to vote either way: fifty-two percent declared they would not support Biden under any circumstances on Election Day, and forty-seven percent expressed similar reservations about voting for President Trump again.
Additionally, both parties appeared confused regarding the other’s political motivations; sixty-six percent of those who did not endorse Joe Biden claimed that they could not comprehend why anyone would support him while a comparable number (sixty-three%) among non-supporters of Donald trump conceded feeling confounded over President Trump supporters as well.
