Dine Brands Global Considering Joint Applebee’s-IHOP Locations for Growth

Dine Brands Global, which owns both Applebee’s and IHOP restaurant chains, is contemplating a joint location of these brands following Applebee’s decline. While Dine Brands added 33 new IHOP locations domestically in 2021, it closed down 46 Applebee’s outlets last year while only opening ten more ones. The company aims to bring back growth for the former brand due to its high construction costs; thus, they are developing a prototype for another strategy called an ‘Apple-pie’, as suggested by IHOP President Jay Martin in February’s earnings call. This dual-branded restaurant concept could potentially double revenue compared to standalone outlets because both restaurants will cover the whole day’s menus – from breakfast items like pancakes at IHOB (formerly known as IHOP) and boneless wings during dinner time at Applebee’s. Focus Brands, which operates Auntie Anne’s, Cinnabon, Carvel, Jamba, Moe’s Southwest Grill, McAlister’s Deli, and Schlotzsky’s under its umbrella, also advocates for the potential of joint locations in busy streetside spots. Focus Brands has 175 such restaurants already operating with an additional sixty-five on their way as per January this year. In Mexico, where international Applebee’s-IHOP combinations exist, Dine Brands CEO John Peyton said they are gaining experience and knowledge regarding the concept’s success before further expansion in the US market.
