Emma Stone, nominated for Best Actress at the 2024 Critics Choice Awards for her role in “Poor Things,” revealed that she is ready to ditch her stage name and go by Emily once again. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter published on Wednesday, the two-time Oscar winner explained that she originally chose Emma because her preferred moniker was already taken when registering as a member of SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists).
Stone told THR: “I freaked out a couple of years ago. For some reason, I was like, ‘I can’t do it anymore. Just call me Emily.’” Nathan Fielder, her co-star in the upcoming documentary series “The Curse,” also revealed that he calls Stone by her real name offscreen.
During their joint interview with THR, when asked to clarify which name should be used for someone who doesn’t know Stone personally, Fielder replied: “Her name is Emily, but she goes by Emma professionally.” However, Stone told the publication that they could refer to her as either moniker. She explained that if a fan came up to her and called her Emily instead of Emma, she wouldn’t correct them.
Stone quipped, referring jokingly to Fielder: “Big Nate – which is his preferred name.” The comedian laughed in response before the conversation moved on. Stone won her second Oscar for Best Actress this March and also picked up a prize during awards season two years earlier when she took home an Academy Award for her role in ‘La La Land.’
In 2018, Stone told late-night host Jimmy Fallon that one of the reasons why she chose to be called Emma was because she loved Baby Spice (Emma Bunton) from the Spice Girls so much as a child. She explained: “My real name is Emily but I wanted to be called Emma because of Baby Spice and guess what? Now, I am.”
