During a recent appearance on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo, Donald Trump’s son and Executive Vice President of The Trump Organization, Eric Trump, warned that if the Supreme Court fails to grant his father immunity from legal action taken during his presidency, it could set a dangerous precedent for investigating former presidents such as Barack Obama and George W. Bush.
Eric Trump explained his views on last week’s oral arguments before the high court, stating that if prosecutors are allowed to investigate past leaders, then “God help us” because this would only benefit big law firms in Washington D.C. As it would likely result in every president being subjected to such probes after leaving office – potentially even Barack Obama due to the infamous Fast and Furious scandal or George Bush over his handling of weapons of mass destruction claims during his presidency, as Eric Trump explained.
The Supreme Court’s justices appeared generally agreed that former President Donald Trump did not have blanket immunity from prosecution during last week’s arguments, with conservative judges expressing concerns about the implications this could hold for future presidents rather than solely regarding Trump himself; while liberal members of the court believed full immunity would create a “lawless King” out of him.
Eric Trump expressed his belief that any decision failing to grant total protection from legal action following time in office will only result in lawyers in Washington D.C benefitting, stating that this situation could potentially see Joe Biden’s presidency disrupted before it has even truly begun – as Eric argued the moment he steps out of the White House there would be a floodgate opening for prosecutors to begin their investigations against him “illegally and ruthlessly”.
In his opinion, presidents must have immunity from such actions following leaving office in order to function effectively while still serving. As Eric explained: “We can’t have this legal lawfare in this country – we need a president who is able to actually run the United States of America.”
When asked about any potential decision coming out of the Supreme Court, Eric Trump emphasized that full immunity was crucial for former presidents as they cannot govern effectively when continuously beset by depositions and subpoenas. Ultimately he expressed his hope “that Presidents have absolute immunity [because] if they don’t – then they are not going to be able to function as the President of the United States.”
