Jerry Seinfeld Criticizes PC Culture’s Impact on Comedy and TV Content

Renowned comedian Jerry Seinfeld has spoken out against political correctness, claiming that it has negatively impacted comedy and led to a lack of humorous content on television. In an interview with The New Yorker’s Radio Hour, the “Seinfeld” creator argued that while people still crave comic relief, they are struggling to find it due to extreme left-wing politics and political correctness (PC). Seinfeld asserted that there was once a wide range of comedic content available on television through shows such as ‘Cheers’, ‘M.A.S.H.’ or ‘All in the Family’ because society still prioritised light entertainment, but this is no longer the case due to PC culture and left-wing politics which have created an environment where people are too worried about offending others. Seinfeld explained that while stand-ups do not face censorship by a higher authority, TV comedy scripts frequently undergo rewrites as they pass through multiple hands in various committees or groups who provide feedback on jokes to ensure they remain PC compliant; ultimately rendering them unfunny. He argued that the parameters within which humorous content must abide depended significantly upon cultural trends which society seems too easily willing to change, akin to skiing’s moving gates where culture moves those limits frequently and it is essential for comedians to be agile enough in order to remain relevant amidst such frequent changes. However, Seinfeld acknowledged that the risk of overstepping these boundaries often leads to more rewarding comedy as audiences enjoy watching stand-ups push past societal norms; with each individual comic taking full responsibility if their jokes do not go down well.
