Talking about a close-knit household indeed! Recently, gossip tabloids have made headlines featuring Kate Hudson and her extended kinfolk following Oliver Hudson’s statements regarding experiencing “trauma” due to their mother Goldie Hawn’s lifestyle. However, Oliver has since clarified that there was no trauma involved in the matter. In response, Kate urged him to disregard haters. Now, it is time for the 45-year-old actress herself to speak out about a different family member – her estranged father Bill Hudson from whom she’s been separated most of her life.
In an interview promoting her debut album set to release next month, Kate couldn’t avoid discussing where they stand now. “Those Hudson Brothers are crazy talented musicians and wonderful songwriters,” she said on CBS News Sunday Morning about her dad Bill Hudson – a renowned musician who formed the group with his two brothers in the late ’60s during their peak success in the 70’s, only to disband by the mid-80s.
Bill was married to Hawn at that time; they divorced just four years after exchanging vows when daughter Kate was a toddler. “My dad is an excellent songwriter,” she added. When asked about her relationship with Bill now, Hudson admitted it’s not particularly close but acknowledged there has been some improvement lately.
“We don’t really have one [a relationship], but it’s warming up,” Kate said during the interview. “There are things happening that all might happen,” she continued, adding that while she had no expectations for their future interactions, her primary goal was to ensure Bill remained happy.
In February 2023, Hudson shed more light on why music didn’t appeal much earlier in her career – it was linked with the complicated relationship between herself and her father. “I think one of the reasons I never really connected with music is something,” she explained during an episode of Bruce Bozzi’s “Table for Two” podcast, referencing Bill Hudson again.
“Earlier on in my career, I definitely thought that’s what I would do [music], but then ‘Almost Famous’ happened,” Kate said about her breakout role in the 2000 film of the same name directed by Cameron Crowe. “But later on, when dealing with daddy issues,” she continued, “I was like: ‘I don’t want to connect this part because that is my dad.’”
“If I put it out there and people didn’t respond well, [it would be] devastating for me,” Hudson said about the decision. She went on further stating: “That one connection with him? If failed miserably at music, it was like a crushing blow to me.” However, as she grew older and had mended relations between her and Russel, Kate concluded by remarking that in any event – family has always come first!
