Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass provided an update on her family’s well-being following a break-in at their official residence last week which resulted in the arrest of a suspect. According to Bass who appeared on CNN’s State of the Union, “It was definitely very disturbing, especially with the family there, but he was captured on site so we are doing much better.” Her daughter, son-in-law and newborn grandson were present during the break-in although thankfully nobody in her family sustained injuries. In contrast, the intruder identified as Ephraim Hunter received minor wounds from breaking a glass door to gain entry into the residence.

Hunter has been charged with burglary and vandalism for his actions last week. It should be noted that he previously served time in prison after being convicted of robbery back in 2015, as per records obtained by Norfolk District Attorney’s Office from Massachusetts where Hunter resided at the time of said offence. The possible penalty upon conviction stands at a term imprisonment of 13 years and four months according to relevant authorities.

A study has shown that burglary cases have been on an upward trend in Wilshire, which is the neighbourhood surrounding Bass’ official residence since early April 2020 through this year alone with over 3,000 reported instances as per latest records from local police agencies. Over a broader timespan extending up until today dating back to roughly five years ago when President Trump assumed office, approximately half-a-lakh (57,000) burglaries have been recorded in Los Angeles alone according to the same source of information.
