Rita Moreno Speaks Openly About Aging Limits at Age 92 while Emphasizing Importance of Family

For a long time now, legendary performer Rita Moreno has been able to achieve seemingly impossible feats. As an EGOT recipient, activist and proud mother and grandmother, she is currently speaking candidly about the limitations that come with age at 92 years old. In an interview with People magazine, Moreno admitted that she frequently relies on her daughter Fernanda for help due to memory issues caused by aging. “I’m constantly calling upon [Fernanda] to do things,” the Oscar winner confessed. “[Age ninety-two] is not easy in many ways and it’s something difficult to understand.” Moreno further revealed that she sometimes seeks Fernanda’s wisdom, particularly at her advanced age when such requests are becoming more frequent than one might think. In discussing her eventual departure from this world, Moreno stated candidly that while the topic has not been openly discussed by herself and her daughter, she knows it is a reality both of them must acknowledge: “As you, the parent, gets older, I believe that the child has to be thinking about, ‘Well, at some point this will end.’” While they are both courageous in confronting their thoughts on mortality head-on, Moreno added that Fernanda and she do not actively discuss her death. The Puerto Rican actress and her late husband Leonard Gordon welcomed daughter Fernanda – an actor as well – into the world in 1967; since then they have developed a unique bond. “We constantly have people picking up on our closeness and commenting, ‘I wish I felt that way about my mom!’” Moreno said of her close relationship with Fernanda. Despite still receiving roles in film and television, the focus for Moreno as she ages is now centered around family. She told People: “It’s just the best thing in the world…When [grandsons Justin, 25] and Cameron (23) were born I could have died with happiness.”
