Instagram powerhouse Selena Gomez has shared her advice on taking a break from social media during an appearance at the 2024 TIME 100 Summit. With over 429 million followers, the actor, singer and entrepreneur is the most-followed woman on the platform; however, she recently took four years off of Instagram to prioritize her mental health. Gomez explained that this decision was one of the best gifts she ever gave herself as it allowed her to be more present in daily life and happier overall. She also noted how refreshing it felt to hear friends recount their days over the phone rather than seeing what they posted on Instagram stories, which made social media interactions feel “more human”. Gomez’s stance is supported by experts who recommend setting specific goals when trying to reduce screen time as abstract aspirations like ‘decrease my phone use’ can be too general. While breaking a heavy reliance on social media may not come easily for everyone, it has been shown that doing so can significantly boost daily experiences – this makes achieving tangible improvements feasibly obtainable!
