10 Years Exploring the Flavors and Charms of Türkiye: A Guide for Foodies and Travel Enthusiasts

Türkiye has been enchanting me for the past decade, and I can’t help but sing its praises to anyone who asks. Whether you are looking for an affordable or luxurious trip, this destination caters to all preferences. Its recent direct flight connection between Detroit and Istanbul makes it more accessible than ever before. If your time is limited, here’s where my heart leads me:

Istanbul – A city that straddles two continents and was once the capital of three empires leaves an indelible impression on visitors. The locals are sincere, and even their cats seem relaxed in this enchanting place. Sipping tea served in a clear glass to enjoy its color is just one inviting experience here. I learned how to barter at Grand Bazaar’s bustling marketplace; the Hagia Sophia with its stunning architecture takes my breath away every time, and house hunting became an irresistible obsession during my stay in Karaköy neighborhood because of its effortless hipness after just two nights.

Pro tip: Remember to wear socks as shoes are not allowed inside mosques.

Bodrum – This coastal city is a mix of contrasts, where traditional wooden gulets dock next to multi-million dollar fiberglass yachts at Yalıkavak Marina – one of Europe’s finest marinas that also houses Dior and Zuma stores for shopping enthusiasts. Bodrum has preserved its old town charm as well; walking around is a delightful experience, especially in the evenings when Bar Street comes alive with nightlife activities.

Pro tip: Don’t miss out on watching ‘Anatolia Show,’ an enchanting performance featuring martial arts and acrobatics at Halikarnas – Bodrum’s oldest club.

Cappadocia – This place has a unique mix of history, culture, and breathtaking landscapes. Whether exploring ancient structures such as the underground City Of Derinkuyu that dates back to 7th century BCE or marveling at Göreme’s mysterious cave churches, Cappadocia is an experience unlike any other in Central Türkiye. And if you are fascinated by picturesque natural landforms then indulge yourself – it offers magical experiences like whimsical fairy chimneys that tower 100 feet tall and a snow-covered dormant volcano, Mount Erciyes (3926 meters). Cappadocia is all about perspective; hence the hundreds of hot air balloon safaris take off daily.

Pro tip: You can create your own ceramic souvenir at Avanos Pottery Workshop or shop for hand-woven rugs in colorful bazaars across Cappadocia’s vibrant markets.

Trabzon – This former Silk Road hub nestled by the Black Sea and surrounded by mountains is an adventure lover’s paradise. From paragliding over Uzungöl Lake, a popular alpine escape for adventurers to laying first tracks at Zigana Ski Centre – one of more than 40 ski resorts in Türkiye during winters or hiking up the Sumela Monastery – an ancient Greek Orthodox architecture wonder built inside cliffs. Akçaabat köftesi, a famous fried meatball dish is a must-try here!

Pro tip: If you’re not afraid of confined spaces then go spelunking at Cal Cave – the second-longest cave system in the world according to their claims.

Antalya – The Turkish Riviera’s beating heart, Antalya is blessed with 231 Blue Flag Beaches that make it stand out from other coastal cities worldwide (US has only two). But there’s more than just stunning beaches here; Köprülü Canyon National Park offers crystal-clear river meandering through the lush greenery, and Duden Waterfalls – The lower falls tumbling down into sea add a mesmerizing sight. Roman ruins at Aspendos theater is an enchanting place that still hosts concerts, operas & ballets! Kaleiçi – Antalya’s old town offers a living open-air museum experience with its rich history and heritage dating back to various ancient empires like Romans, Ottomans Turkish, Seljuk Turkish or Eastern Roman influences.

This article has given me some great ideas for my trip to Türkiye! Can you please suggest some traditional dishes that I should try in each of these places?
