In Boston, Mohammed Chowdhury, a 47-year-old man, has been sentenced to eight years behind bars for attempting to hire an assassin to eliminate his estranged wife and her new partner. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in the District of Massachusetts revealed that Chowdhury offered $8,000 to someone he believed was a hitman but who turned out to be an undercover federal agent instead. He pleaded guilty to two charges related to using interstate commerce facilities for murder-for-hire purposes. In addition to his prison term, Chowdhury will also serve three years of supervised release upon completion of his sentence. Law enforcement officials were alerted by a tipoff in November 2022 that Chowdhury was trying to recruit help from someone willing to kill his wife and provided the undercover agent with details about her whereabouts, schedules, as well as photos. When he allegedly handed over $500 for a deposit during their meeting earlier this week, Chowdhury was arrested by authorities. According to prosecutors, Chowdhury told agents that his wife wouldn’t let him see their children and wanted the killings to appear like beatings with robbery as the motive behind them. “Anyone willing to hire a hitman to eliminate a former loved one and her new partner is clearly dangerous,” Jodi Cohen, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Boston Division, said via an online news release. Acting United States Attorney Joshua S. Levy stated that: “[Chowdhury] thought he could get away with murder.” He further added that “Mr. Chowdhury’s alarming behaviour in executing this horrifying scheme represents the worst possible manifestation of domestic abuse, and we will utilize all resources at our disposal to protect women who are victims of such violence,” Levy said.
