LOS ANGELES – Known for her timeless hit “My Heart Will Go On,” Canadian singer Céline Dion recently opened up about the lavish wedding she had with Rene Angelil over two decades ago. The ceremony remains unforgettable not just because of its romance but also due to a painful mishap involving her extravagant tiara.
During an appearance in Vogue’s “My Life in Looks” series, Dion shared insights into various iconic outfits she has worn throughout her career, including the dress from her wedding day. The gown became secondary to the story of her headpiece – a magnificent piece with 2000 Swarovski crystals and an extended veil that was both beautiful and troublesome during one of the most significant moments in Dion’s life.
Despite its stunning appearance, the tiara posed some serious issues on their wedding day. According to Dion, she had rehearsed wearing it without any problems in a spacious ballroom with wooden floors. However, when they moved into the cathedral where her actual ceremony took place, things changed drastically due to carpeted flooring that altered how the tiara sat on her head – an issue she was not prepared for.
“I practiced and everything went smoothly but when I had to walk in the Cathedral, it’s no wooden floors; it’s a carpet,” Dion recalled. “And as soon as you lift your leg like that…Immediate facelift! Am I going to make it? Am I going to make it to my future husband?”
Despite this initial hiccup with the tiara, the evening unfolded smoothly – filled with family and friends enjoying themselves at the ceremony followed by an afterparty. However, when they removed her headpiece, Dion discovered that she had sustained a wound due to pressure being too much for her forehead. She revealed that it swelled up like “the size of an egg” in the middle of her forehead, requiring antibiotics treatment which lasted three weeks following their wedding day.
Nevertheless, according to Dion, none of this could diminish how wonderful a moment the ceremony was; one she will cherish forever. She added that if given another chance, she would have worn an even bigger dress and multiple outfits for her big night because Angelil brought “the best” in her – something which still holds true today.
