Century-Old Time Capsules Unearthed in Minnesota and Virginia

A time capsule buried in 1920 at Owatonna High School in Minnesota has been discovered during a demolition project of the former school by construction workers who were removing front pillars and doors. The superintendent of the local school district, Jeff Elstad, stated that they “were thrilled to discover” the century-old time capsule when it was unearthed on Monday. Items found inside included a roster of teachers and administrators from Owatonna Public Schools in 1920, high school newspapers, local papers, financial statements, and more. The museum committee at the school is working with the Steele County Historical Society to preserve these items for future display or inclusion into their collections. This discovery has allowed the community to reflect on its history as they appreciate the historical significance of this time capsule. Elsewhere in Virginia, officials have opened a 1887-era time capsule found inside the pedestal of a Robert E. Lee statue which contained documents, coins and other artefacts from that era.
