The Colorado Buffaloes football team’s use of the transfer portal has garnered attention across college football for two years now as head coach Deion Sanders tinkered with his roster since joining Boulder. Recently, it was learned that this trend could have damaging consequences as well. Running back Dylan Edwards, who led Colorado in rushing last season, announced on Sunday via social media that he is transferring to Kansas State. The Wildcats officially confirmed the move on Monday.
Edwards rushed for 321 yards and a touchdown while also displaying his playmaking ability through the air with 36 receptions for 299 yards and four scores last season. He will have three years of eligibility left upon transferring, giving Edwards ample opportunity to prove himself in Manhattan.
Edwards’ decision makes sense given that his father Leon played football at Kansas State from 1992-1994. In fact, during the final year of his collegiate career, he rushed for an impressive 203 yards and two touchdowns. The elder Edwards will undoubtedly be proud to see how far the game has brought Dylan all these years later, a storyline that could add extra intrigue as Kansas State looks ahead towards its upcoming season under new head coach Avery Johnson (formerly of UNLV).
Johnson is taking over for Will Howard who transferred from K-State in the offseason to Ohio State. Last year’s squad finished with an impressive 9-4 record and closed out their campaign by securing a win during Pop-Tarts Bowl action. As Sanders continues his roster shuffle, it remains unclear what Colorado will look like come fall; however, Edwards’ departure is undoubtedly significant as the Buffaloes prepare to begin spring drills next week (March 8th).
