Boston resident Mohammed Chowdhury, 47 years old, has been sentenced to eight years behind bars for attempting to hire a hitman to murder his ex-wife and her new boyfriend. The U.S Attorney’s Office in the District of Massachusetts reported that during November last year, an informant alerted authorities about Chowdhury’s plan to have his estranged wife killed. In response, law enforcement received the informant’s phone number, which they then passed on to a covert federal agent posing as a contract killer.
Chowdhury agreed to pay $4,000 for each murder and provided photographs of both victims along with their addresses, workplaces, and schedules. He also told the undercover operative that his wife had barred him from seeing his children which is what drove him to consider carrying out such heinous acts. When apprehended by authorities on Tuesday, Chowdhury allegedly handed over a $500 deposit as part of their arrangement.
“Individuals willing to hire hitmen for the murder of loved ones are undoubtedly dangerous members of society,” said Jodi Cohen in an online press release while addressing FBI staff operating within its Boston Division, serving as Special Agent-in-Charge (SAC). “Mr Chowdhury’s conduct was nothing short of reprehensible. He literally thought he could get away with murder.”
Acting United States Attorney Joshua S. Levy added that the case represented an extreme form of domestic violence and authorities would use every possible means at their disposal to shield women who have found themselves trapped in abusive relationships from harm’s way. Chowdhury has also been sentenced to three years under supervised release following his prison term, which is set to commence immediately after the verdict was handed down by U.S District Judge F. Dennis Saylor IV on Thursday afternoon during a hearing held at Moakley Federal Courthouse in Boston.
