Arizona state Senator Jake Hoffman has announced his appointment as a Republican National Committee (RNC) national committeeman for the state. The news comes just days after a grand jury charged several of former President Donald Trump’s allies, including Hoffman, over their attempts to undermine the 2020 election results in Arizona.
In an X Saturday post on January 8th, Hoffman said: “I’m humbled and honored to have been elected as the next RNC National Committeeman for Arizona!”. This comes after a grand jury indicted Trump’s allies, including Hoffman, over their efforts to reverse his election loss in Arizona.
Hoffman sent a two-page letter dated January 5th, 2021, to former Vice President Mike Pence requesting that the latter not finalise election results for Arizona during joint sessions of Congress on January 6th, 2021 and instead seek clarification from Arizona’s state legislature about which set of electors is appropriate.
In interviews following his indictment last week, Hoffman repeatedly argued against sending any electors as “we don’t have certainty in the outcome of our election”, and urged contesting Democrat electors if they were sent. Following news of his indictment on January 5th, 2021, Hofmann insisted he is ‘innocent of all charges’, stated that he will defend himself vigorously’ and looks forward to being cleared in the judicial process’.
CNN reported last week that Boris Epshteyn – a former White House advisor who still maintains close ties with Trump, Mark Meadows (former Chief of Staff), and Rudy Giuliani are also among those charged. While Trump is not listed as an indicted person in Arizona’s case, the details provided suggest that he may be ‘Unindicted Coconspirator 1’.
The RNC and the Arizona GOP have both declined to comment on Hoffman’s appointment thus far.
