Kenner Police Officers Shot During Standoff With Suspected Double Shooter, SWAT Team Eliminates Accused Culprit Matthew Lathers

Authorities stated three law enforcement officials serving for the police department in Kenner, Louisiana were shot during a confrontation with an individual suspected of perpetrating two separate shootings earlier that day on Sunday. The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office SWAT team dispatched a sniper who terminated Matthew Lathers, identified as the accused culprit, after he emerged holding a rifle and fired upon three officers following their encirclement of his residence during negotiations which failed to yield any positive response from him throughout numerous attempts.
Two wounded officers were reportedly treated for injuries and later released at an unspecified time whilst one victim’s health remained stable as per the latest reports available. The first shooting incident involved a 56-year old man who was shot during an armed robbery, while Lathers allegedly mistook two other men he encountered nearby his residence to be law enforcement officials and subsequently opened fire on them in another separate occurrence.
Jefferson Parish Sheriff Joe Lopinto commented that the suspect probably did not want to get arrested as negotiations failed due to a lack of response from him, despite repeated attempts by authorities. The SWAT team’s sniper eliminated Lathers after he appeared again with his rifle in an attempt to attack officers for a second time during their standoff.
