Three law enforcement officers sustained injuries after responding to a double shooting outside a residence in Kenner, Louisiana on Sunday morning. The assailant responsible for both shootings has since been killed by a sniper from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office following an intense standoff at the suspect’s home.
The gunman identified as Matthew Lathers, 31 years old, had previously obtained an arrest warrant on charges of attempted murder and armed robbery earlier in the week. The victims who were shot outside the house where the incident took place informed responding officers about the location belonging to a relative of Lathers’ family members.
Upon obtaining a search warrant for the residence, a SWAT team arrived at the scene. However, upon entering, they came under fire from within the property, prompting one or more officers returning gunfire in response. Three police officers were reportedly shot during this confrontation with uncertainty if Lathers received injuries too at that stage. Kenner Police Captain Michael Cunningham stated two of these injured officers have since been discharged and released from hospital while another remains stable under medical care.
Two bystanders who got caught in the initial shootings were also rushed to a nearby health center where both victims currently are said to be receiving treatment with stabled conditions. In light of this incident, Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office has assumed control over investigations into Lathers’ death as Kenner Police Chief Keith Conley and Sheriff Joseph Lopinto jointly addressed the media during a news conference on Sunday afternoon.
