An unusual sight graced the Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama during a recent IndyCar Series race as a mannequin fell onto the racetrack. Álex Palou was leading the competition when broadcasters noticed Georgina, the name of the lifeless figure, near the course around Lap 52. The park’s art installation included this particular piece. As it turned out, the mannequin plummeted from a pedestrian overhang that overlooked the track. One driver ran over its wrist as they sped past. “Put this into the list of things you don’t see at a racetrack,” one broadcaster exclaimed. The race continued without an immediate caution for Georgina’s unexpected presence on the course, and it wasn’t even the only odd object in sight; a sculpture shaped like a spider adorned another part of the track as drivers maneuvered around it during turns. Scott McLaughlin emerged victorious from this peculiar race – his second consecutive win at Barber Motorsports Park. Following his success, he reflected on what was undoubtedly an emotional experience for him: “It’s just nice,” said McLaughlin. “It was a little emotional for sure.” The Team Penske driver’s triumph came after IndyCar stripped Josef Newgarden of his season-opening victory and disqualified McLaughlin due to manipulating the push-to-pass system earlier in the week, adding yet another layer of intrigue to this already captivating event. Will Power finished second behind him while Linus Lundqvist, Felix Rosenqvist, and Palou rounded out the top five finishers. Newgarden placed 16th overall. “We just had to keep rolling,” McLaughlin added. “We know our job. We know what we need to do.”
