Suzanne Morphew’s Homicide Confirmed: Remains Found with Drug Intoxication, Unresolved Leads

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation has announced that Suzanne Morphew, a mother of two who went missing almost four years ago on Mother’s Day in 2020, died by homicide “in the setting of” drug intoxication. Her remains were found around 45 miles south of her home in Maysville, Colorado, where she was reported missing. The Caffee County Medical Examiner determined that Morphew’s death occurred due to butorphanol, azaperone, and medetomidine intoxication – the same sedatives Barry Morphew previously told investigators he used for shooting deer in his yard with a tranquilizer gun. This investigation remains ongoing, with law enforcement urging anyone with relevant information to contact (719) 312-7530. However, Iris Eytan, an attorney representing Barry Morphew, has expressed skepticism about the integrity of this investigation and accused authorities of failing to follow all leads or conduct forensic testing in previous investigations. The charges against Barry were dismissed without prejudice last year after prosecutors said they needed more time to find his wife’s body; he still faces potential future criminal proceedings, as Eytan has also highlighted that Morphew’s remains have not been found anywhere near her home or the county where she lived when she went missing. Furthermore, text messages between Suzanne and Barry from just before her disappearance suggest they were both having affairs at this time; four days prior to going missing, Suzanne sent a message saying “I could care less what you’re up to and have been for years.” No other arrests have been made in relation to this case. The Denver Gazette also previously reported on how investigators found unknown male DNA near Morphew’s bike when it was discovered after she went missing, which matched profiles from sexual assault cases across multiple states; however, Eytan has accused authorities of failing to test her clothing for DNA and refusing to disclose whether they have conducted tests using a bullet recovered alongside Morphew’s remains. The charges against Barry remain subject to possible future reinstatement or renewal by prosecutors.
