US Considering Sanctions Against Israeli Security Unit Over Human Rights Violations in Pre-Gaza Conflict Era

The US State Department has concluded that five Israeli security units breached human rights prior to the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, but only one remains under consideration for possible sanctions under a federal law called the Leahy Law. The other four have reportedly rectified their violations. According to deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel’s statement on Monday, consultations with Israeli authorities are ongoing as they provide additional information regarding the remaining unit, which is believed to be Netzach Yehuda Battalion – a force associated with religious nationalist factions in Israel.
Patel also stated that all violations happened before October 7 and none occurred during hostilities against Hamas in Gaza. The Leahy Law forbids the US from providing assistance to foreign security units implicated in human rights abuses, but exceptions are made if a country’s government demonstrates effective steps towards prosecuting responsible members of such forces.
In recent weeks, Israeli officials have revealed further information that could persuade authorities against punitive action as Blinken frequently referenced the Leahy Law determination process during his previous statements regarding military assistance to Israel and other countries receiving US aid. This story is still developing, so stay tuned for updates.
