Renowned artificial intelligence companies have been called upon by the US government to provide advice on how their technology can be utilized to safeguard critical infrastructure against potential attacks powered by AI itself, according to a report from CNN’s Brian Fung and Sean Lyngaas. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has formed an advisory panel consisting of CEOs from major tech companies such as Google, Microsoft, IBM, Cisco, Northrop Grumman and Delta Airlines that will advise businesses across critical industries including airlines and utilities on how to “responsibly” use AI. The move comes amid growing concerns over the risks posed by AI technology in light of its potential benefits for national interests. DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas highlighted these dangers, stating: “Artificial intelligence is a transformative technology that can advance our national interests in unprecedented ways… at the same time it presents real risks – risks we can mitigate by adopting best practices and taking other studied, concrete actions.” The panel will also help prepare businesses for AI-related disruptions. Among its participants are civil rights groups such as the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law alongside technology providers like Amazon Web Services (AWS) and chipmakers AMD.
