The University of Texas at Austin has witnessed another gathering of individuals supporting Palestine. Around eight people have been apprehended by the UTPD in light of violations to university guidelines after authorities announced a dispersion order for protesters assembling on South Mall. To reinforce security measures, DPS officers also arrived at campus around 1:30 p.m.. Following a directive issued from both academic officials and police enforcement representatives compelling individuals protesting against the administration’s decision to remove tents set up in an unapproved location within UT grounds to depart or face repercussions, law enforcers confiscated them but encountered physical resistance along with verbal insults. The university has confirmed that a majority of protesters are not affiliated with the educational institution; besides this demonstration and those carried out over October priorly (a minimum of 13 protests), four additional gatherings took place in April, largely without incident. A few days ago, UT received online threats from an organization planning today’s protest via digital platforms. The university has reported these menaces to relevant authorities at local, state and federal levels since last Wednesday.
The demonstrations at the University of Texas are part of a larger movement across America; for instance, pro-Palestinian activists camping in tents were asked to abandon their settlement by Columbia President Minouche Shafik as her declaration that “Columbia will not divest from Israel” was published. In New York City, 133 individuals protesting at NYU have been taken into custody after police officers claimed they encountered bottles and other objects being hurled in the direction of law enforcers during this week’s demonstrations; four protesters were arrested on Monday afternoon outside Yale University as a result of their refusal to abandon an encampment located within plaza grounds. At Georgia, multiple individuals protesting for Palestine have been apprehended by police and the State Patrol Troopers during a rally held at its Athens campus.
