UT Austin Protesters Arrested in Solidarity With Palestine, Part of Nationwide Movement

Rewriting Article: “Protesters Advocate for Palestine at UT Austin; Four Arrested”

In Texas, supporters of the Palestinian cause have gathered once again at the University of Texas at Austin (UT). The police department on campus has issued a dispersal order as demonstrators congregate in the South Mall area. Approximately four individuals were taken into custody by law enforcement officers who arrived around 1:30 p.m. This protest follows similar events that took place last week, during which nearly sixty people – including a photographer from FOX7 Austin – were arrested and subsequently had their charges dropped on the following day.

These protests are part of wider demonstrations taking place across America in solidarity with Palestine. At Columbia University in New York City, protesters who have been camping out in tents since April 20th received an ultimatum to vacate by 2 p.m., following a statement from President Minouche Shafik stating that the university would not divest its investments from Israel. At NYU on Monday evening, police arrested one hundred and thirty-three protesters for disorderly conduct after they refused to leave their encampment in the center of campus; all were subsequently released with a summons requiring them to appear before court at some later date. In Connecticut, forty-eight individuals – four of whom are not students – have been apprehended by police officers on the Yale University grounds for refusing to evacuate an encamped protest area located in a plaza at the center of campus. Additionally, Georgia authorities detained several demonstrators during protests at UGA’s Athens campus; they were charged with violating state law while attempting to show solidarity through activism related specifically and directly only within University systems across US Territory.”
