Variability in Middle Class Income Threshold across Cities in Arizona: Insights from SmartAsset Study

“Middle Class Threshold Varies by Location in Arizona”

PHOENIX – The question of how much money is required to be considered part of the middle class can vary depending on where you live. According to a new study conducted by SmartAsset, this threshold differs from city to city within Arizona as well.

The research analyzed data from the Census Bureau for 345 major cities in the United States and defined “middle class” as being between two-thirds and double the median income of an area. The results showed that a person living in Tucson would need to earn at least $34,184 annually to maintain middle-class status, while those residing in Glendale required a minimum annual salary of $48,269. In San Tan Valley and Gilbert, the respective thresholds were even higher: $59,381 and $74,255.

These figures are compared to data from SmartAsset’s 2023 study which revealed that individuals in Tucson needed an annual income of at least $33,705 for middle-class status while those living in Gilbert required a minimum salary of $70,217. The results showed significant differences based on location with people residing in the San Francisco Bay area needing to earn at least $81,623 to be considered part of the “middle class”. On the other hand, individuals inhabiting Cleveland were found only require a yearly salary of approximately $23,827 for middle-class status.

The study’s findings revealed that cities renowned as technological hubs demanded higher salaries compared with places where costs are lower.”
