Abbott Leads Backlash Against Biden’s Expansion of LGBTQ Protections Under Title IX in Wake of State Opposition and Lawsuit

In a letter sent to President Biden, Abbott criticized the expansion of Title IX protection for “gender identity” and argued that it exceeded the president’s constitutional authority while also infringing on laws protecting women in sports from men competing against them. This issue is drawing significant opposition: Florida, Oklahoma, Georgia, among other states have expressed their intentions to legally challenge these federal protections. In fact, Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr has already filed a lawsuit accusing the Biden administration of “gutting commonsense provisions that protect female athletes.”
