Bois D’Arc Lake Fully Filled: New Texas Reservoir Boosts Water Supply in North Texas Suburbs After Heavy Rainfall

In Fannin County, Texas, a brand new lake has been fully filled thanks to recent rainfall. The North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) announced this on Monday, revealing that Bois D’Arc Lake now holds its maximum capacity after three years of filling. This follows the opening for recreational activities such as boating and fishing earlier in February 2023.

Bois D’arc is the first significant reservoir to be built in Texas over a span of almost thirty years, according to NTMWD. The lake spans an area of approximately 16,641 acres and will contribute significantly to the water supply for several rapidly expanding suburbs served by NTMWD such as Plano, Frisco, Garland, McKinney, and Allen. Bois D’arc Lake started delivering water into the system in March 2023.

The announcement comes after a period of heavy rainfall that has replenished reservoirs across Texas following an extended drought. According to weather experts, the current conditions have provided relief for communities dealing with water shortages over recent years and should ease pressure on dwindling aquifers. Aside from filling up new lakes like Bois D’arc Lake, rainfall has also helped replenish existing reservoirs such as Lake Ray Roberts in Cooke County which is now at 97% capacity after falling to historically low levels of just 24% two years ago due to the prolonged drought.
