Muriel Bowser, mayor of Washington D.C., seems to downplay the severity of crime in her city. The nation’s capital is plagued by violence and danger that makes it feel like a war zone at times. It has become so perilous that Secret Service agents have engaged in shootouts with carjackers, 2023 was one of the deadliest years on record for the area, and although there may be minor improvements, it is hard to believe anyone feels safe here. I personally witnessed a gun battle last year during Memorial Day weekend that sounded like an intense scene from “Black Hawk Down” outside my doorstep.
Despite this alarming situation, Bowser pointed blame towards media organizations for supposedly overlooking weeklong streaks with relatively less violence in the city. During a recent press conference captured by WUSA9’s Lorenzo Hall and shared on Monday, she stated: “You all have been waiting [for me] to say something about violence…[The media] didn’t report that we had over a week where violence was down…homicide didn’t happen. I know you didn’t report that but that’s okay – I will.”
However, people did not respond kindly towards her remarks. A decrease in violent crime should never be cause for celebration by any public official as it simply indicates how severe the issue has become within America’s capital city. Last night, while making my way to meet someone, I witnessed four individuals who appeared almost zombie-like – a situation that left me feeling uneasy despite being an adult male with heightened awareness of my surroundings. Imagine what would happen if you were elderly or small in stature and found yourself facing off against D.C.’s criminal element?
I am unsure how to restore safety to Washington, D.C., but perhaps a good place to start might be for Bowser to avoid criticizing the media over supposed coverage shortcomings during moments of relative calmness within her city’s crime-ridden landscape. Instead, she could focus on making criminals more afraid than they currently are by implementing effective measures against them.
